I bought this book because I feel like my nerves can sometimes hold me back in work. This book helped me realise that the feelings I sometimes experience when presenting, in meetings, or speaking to superiors is perfectly normal and offers practical solutions to deal with these feelings.

There are exercises throughout the book to complete. The reason I only gave a 4 is because I am off on leave from work at the moment so cannot yet apply what I have learned. I do think it will help me though.

This was the type of book you write to promote yourself - nothing more than a marketing tool so Jonathan Berent can say he released a book. The author's attempts to promote himself was most apparent when it came to the topic of prescription medication, which is of course outside his profitability purview. Whether we like it or not, we live in a synthetically constructed society that forces some of us to have to chemically alter ourselves to deal with the pressures, demands, and crippling anxiety of our highly uncertain times. Some of us simply have no other options but prescriptions, myself included, and no simple shift in thinking is going to solve this problem. Some of the content was helpful, but overall, its your stock-standard, run-of-the-mill life advice that could easily have been ripped off from any New Age hippy who's into all the the Law of Attraction psychobabble. Also, I would just like to say that public speaking is NOT the epitome of success for many of us and personally, I'm tired of being told it is.
If you are one of those people who fear speaking up at meetings, sometimes going into full-fledged panic because of the fear, this is the book for you. The prime author, a therapist who has been helping people with this for decades, provides techniques that can help the sufferer alleviate and remove the problem. One of the major teachings in this book is that the goal is not to kill the adrenaline that arrives along with these fearful situations, but to come to learn to accept the adrenaline, which will be there no matter what, as a strength rather than a weakness. We don't want to become deadwood; we want to become individuals who can harness the adrenaline and use it to our advantage.

Berent works from the theoretical framework that there are five mindsets/attitudes that engage in any situation and that when there is an imbalance among this that problems occur. These mindsets/attitudes are the Critical Par rent, the Adapted Child, the Nurturing Parent, the Natural Child and the Adult. When the first two predominate by being judgmental, creating unrealistic expectations, causing shame and embarrassment, is when workplace anxiety can get out of control. Berent provides relaxation exercises and advise on how two lower the levels of these two potential culprits and maintaining a proper balance. I call these two mindsets potential culprits because, when accessed properly, they can actually help rather than hinder a situation.

Berent also explains that someone who is breathing properly - long, deep breaths arising from the stomach. These breaths are also part of a technique to calm down when encountering a situation that causes anxiety. Berent also explains how warm hands are an indication of a relaxed state, and how one can attache better to their feelings by both monitoring hand temperature and exploring rather than detaching from feelings.
This is a well-researched and well-WRITTEN book. Even if a reader does not suffer from this particular disorder, this book stands on its own as a fascinating window into a little-discussed but apparently very common problem.
Thanks!
I think this book really hones in on the main reasons for feeling nervous at work or at social situations in general. It teaches you not to be afraid of your fear/adrenaline response but embrace it and eventually move past it. For someone who has suffered from this affliction for many years and finally finding some relief, this book goes a long way to helping one find their "voice."
After reading the book, I realized what it was that made me uncomfortable on the job and I quit. I didn't need that.
Written in a style which is easy to follow, practical hints and ideas that I had not read in other self help books about anxiety.
